The Self-Directed MFA is an informational website that exists to help writers design their own course of self-directed study. Following the guidance herein does not result in a master of fine arts (MFA) degree. This is not a master of fine arts (MFA) degree program. If we provide guidance, mentoring, and writing courses, these are unaccredited and do not count toward a master’s degree.

That said, if you prepare a portfolio of the work you’ve completed during your self-directed study, you may be able to persuade a university to count it for Prior Learning Credit toward a degree. This is a remote possibility, depending on how well you’ve documented your work and how persuasively you make your case.
